If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl?
As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom.
From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

ReplyDeleteI think this book is getting better and better. I just started it but it starts off good. The two main characters are Ruth and Isabelle. I feel so bad what they are going through. They just got sold to a white family, but the wife likes Ruth better then Isabelle because Isabelle talks a lot. Isabelle does talk a lot at times. Ruth is younger then Isabelle and they are both sisters.
ReplyDeleteWhen they got sold they got nothing to bring with them to remind them of their parents or house. Isabelle is really protective of her sister witch I don't blame her. Ruth is kind of to young to understand what is all happening but she is old enough to know that she needs to behave and work when she is told.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this book but by the way you describe the plot, it kind of reminds me of The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers. I have that one if you are interested. I love how much you are reading this year! Good readers make good writers!
DeleteIsabel tries her hardest to keep Ruth from getting in trouble. Whenever Ruth does something bad Isabel takes the blame because she knows Ruth is to young to get beat by her mistakes. Isabel wants to take Ruth and run away during the night a lot but decides to wait for the British to come because she thinks they will be able to free her and her sister. One night the master's wife sells Ruth without telling Isabel and Isabel is now worried and wants to find her sister and go home.
ReplyDeleteThis book also reminds me of Gary Paulsen's two books, Nightjohn and Sarny. I bet you would love Sarny, it is so good. The dialect is a little hard to get used to, but I loved the characters and the plot.
DeleteI'm mostly done with the book and it turned out to be a pretty good book. Not one of my favorites but a book I will remember. I'm at the part when Madam tells Isabel that she still owns Ruth but gave her away because she wasn't that useful.. I think that Isabel will try to find her sister and will try to get Curzon out of the jail so he can be free too. Isabel has to now start lying at times even though she doesn't like to. Isabel tries to push memories of her mom, dad, and her sister that is until she finds out were Ruth is at.
ReplyDeleteIm done with chains and I liked it. Now I am reading Cloaked by Alex Flinn. It is mostly about how a princess wants this guy named Johnny to find her brother, the prince that turned into a frog. If Johnny does find the prince the princess will marry Johnny. Johnny is poor and lives with his mom because one day there dad went missing and never returned. The princess offers money for Johnny to find her brother. Johnny tells his mom about finding the frog and his mom says he should try. Johnny's mother believes there is magic because she believes that her husband will return one day. Johnny and his mom owns a shoe repair shop.
DeleteThis book has some fun twists. I am curious to see what you think of it.
DeleteI finished Cloaked and really liked it, but Beastly is still my favorite book that is by Alex Flinn. Cloaked was almost predictable for me. Johnny did help the princess find her brother and at the end of the book Johnny meets someone special that his mom and him been waiting for. Meg kept secrets from Johnny at the begining but later tells him her secrets that helped him at the end of the book. Johnny doesn't get made though. Johnny wanted the princess to show everyone on t.v his shoes that she was wearing since he made them. When the princess shows them off Johnny becomes really rich and his mom and him can now live happy without worrying if they can keep the pay bills paid.
ReplyDeleteGreat job reading this quarter, Gabriela. I hope you continue to read as much and enjoy it throughout this year. Let me know when you finish a good book!
